Calling all curious minds and history buffs! The Egypt Centre offers exciting volunteering opportunities for current Swansea University students. Immerse yourself in the captivating world of ancient Egypt while contributing to a vibrant museum. Whether you’re passionate about Egyptology, enjoy interacting with people, or simply want to gain valuable experience, there’s a volunteer role waiting for you. Join our dedicated student team and play a vital role in supporting the museum’s mission and sharing the wonders of ancient Egypt with the world.
What Can I Do?
The Museum needs volunteers to complete three essential and core roles. These are:
- Gallery supervision and maintenance
- Visitor and customer care/interaction
- Educational delivery
There are a variety of roles you can get involved in, all of which will have at least one element of the core functions. The following role descriptions are available:
- Gallery Assistant
- Educational Assistant
- Shop Assistant
- Admin Assistant
- Gallery Supervisor*
- Educational Leader*
Please note that we do not offer any behind-the-scenes curatorial work. All roles have an element of visitor interaction.
* This is a progression role; you will not be able to start at this level.
Current Swansea University students can gain valuable HEAR awards by volunteering at the Egypt Centre. These awards recognise your contributions in various roles. To earn a bronze award, complete criteria for one role; for silver, two roles; and for gold, three roles. Upon graduation, these awards will be added to your degree transcript.
When Can I Do My Placement and for How Long?
Student volunteers can volunteer any time Tuesday–Saturday, 10am–4pm. We understand that student volunteers have other commitments and offer flexible options. For more information or clarification, please speak to the Museum Volunteer Manager.
Are There Any Restrictions?
Yes. All potential volunteers need to have two satisfactory references and a DBS check. This is because we work extensively with vulnerable groups. These must be received and satisfactory before you start. All new volunteers also have an induction period when they start, which lasts a minimum of 20 hours. We specialise in working with people of all abilities. If you have any specific questions or concerns, please discuss them with the Museum Volunteer Manager.
How Do I Get Involved?
Simply complete the application form and post it to the Museum Volunteer Manager. They will acknowledge your application and begin processing it by requesting your references. Please follow all subsequent instructions to apply for a DBS check, which will be sent to your home address. Once you have received the DBS, contact the Museum Volunteer Manager. If your references have been returned, they will arrange an induction date.
