Museum Awards

The Egypt Centre has twice been awarded the title of Best Leisure and Tourism Establishment by Swansea Live, in both 2018 and 2019.

In 2015, the Egypt Centre was jointly awarded the Marketing Project of the Year at The Marketing Excellence Awards. This was in recognition of the Night at the Museum project, which took place in 2014.

In 2006, the Egypt Centre was shortlisted for the Times Higher Education Supplement Award for widening participation.

In 2017, The Young Egyptologist Workshop staff was shortlisted in the Learning Outside the Classroom Innovator category in the national Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC).

The Young Egyptologist Workshop has been recognised for its positive impact on children in Community First areas, receiving additional awards such as the Education Extra Award (2003) and the ContinYou Cymru award (2006).

Volunteer Awards

The Egypt Centre is proud to recognise the invaluable contributions of our volunteers. We have received numerous awards for our volunteer program, highlighting our commitment to providing exceptional opportunities for community engagement. These awards are a testament to the dedication and passion of our volunteers, who play a vital role in enriching the visitor experience.

In 2018, the Egypt Centre volunteers received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the equivalent of an MBE for volunteer groups. Created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee, the Award has been shining a light on the fantastic work of voluntary groups from all across the UK for many years. The young volunteers have been the recipients of the Diana Award on seven occasions (2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).

The Egypt Centre’s volunteers have been the regional winner (Wales) of the Marsh Awards for Museum Learning. Firstly, in 2009 for our young volunteers, and again in 2017 for all our volunteers.

In 2010, the Egypt Centre’s volunteers were awarded the Volunteer Group of the Year by the Welsh Charity Awards. Additionally, they were Highly Commended in 2013 and 2018.

Individual Honours

The Egypt Centre team has been recognised for their exceptional work. Several volunteers and staff members have received individual awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions.

Marsh Award for Volunteering 2020

Egypt Centre volunteer Sam Powell won the prestigious 2020 Marsh Award Welsh Volunteer of the Year prize. The award recognised Sam’s commitment to supporting the museum and the community during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Research as Art 2021

Ken Griffin (Curator) won the Research as Art award in 2021 for his project Reflecting on the Past: The Display of Egyptian Mummies. This was a collaborative project between Ken and Egyptian conservator Mohamed Shabib.

Professor Eileen Hooper-Greenhill Prize 2022

Ken Griffin (Curator) was awarded the Professor Eileen Hooper-Greenhill Price (2022) for his MA dissertation in Museum Studies at Leicester University, which was entitled From Surviving to Thriving: Assessing the Impact of The Egypt Centre’s Online Engagement during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
