Are you aged 10–17 and fascinated by the mysteries of ancient Egypt? The Egypt Centre has an exciting opportunity for you! Our Young Volunteer Programme lets you delve into the captivating world of pharaohs, pyramids, and hieroglyphs while developing valuable life skills. Join our team of enthusiastic young volunteers and contribute to a vibrant museum environment. With flexible scheduling and a chance to learn from experienced staff, it’s a fantastic way to ignite your passion for history and make a difference.

What Do Our Young Volunteers Do?

Volunteering at the Egypt Centre is fun! As a young volunteer, you’ll be a Gallery Assistant, responsible for overseeing our galleries, interacting with visitors, and demonstrating hands-on activities like mummification. You might even have the opportunity to handle some of the objects in our collection.

While adults supervise, you’re responsible for delivering activities on Saturdays and representing the Egypt Centre. This is a unique opportunity, as no other museum in the country is run so completely by young people.

Can I Volunteer?

Absolutely! Anyone over 10 can volunteer. You don’t need prior knowledge of ancient Egypt or museums, but an interest in history and heritage is essential, as is enjoying working with diverse people.

The Egypt Centre is dedicated to working with and welcoming people of all abilities. If you’re interested in volunteering but have specific questions or concerns, please contact the Museum Volunteer Manager for a discussion.

When Can I Volunteer?

The young volunteer program runs on Saturdays from 10 am–4 pm. Typically, you should commit to at least 3 hours per Saturday, although we are flexible. You can even volunteer for more hours! If you’re under 12, you’re limited to 3 hours per day. After completing your induction, you can volunteer during your school holidays.

How Do I Get Involved?

It’s easy to get involved! Download and complete the Young Volunteer application/consent form. Mail or drop it off at the museum, and we’ll process your application. If you’re over 16, you’ll need a character reference.

Due to high demand, we can only accept 35 young people at a time. This might mean you’re placed on a waiting list, but don’t worry, most people wait only 3 months for a spot!
