Discover the wonders of ancient Egypt and gain valuable work experience at the Egypt Centre. Our under-18 work experience programme offers a unique opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of Egyptology, work alongside museum professionals, and gain hands-on experience in various aspects of museum operations. Whether you’re considering a career in heritage or simply want to explore your interests, this programme is perfect for budding archaeologists and museum enthusiasts.

What Can I Do?

A work placement at the Egypt Centre is ideal for those interested in a heritage career, history, or practical customer service experience. Here, you’ll gain firsthand experience of museum operations, including gallery supervision, visitor interaction, and activity delivery. You’ll also receive training in practical preventative conservation and learn about ancient Egypt through independent research. We prioritise hands-on experience, so you’ll be a Gallery Assistant, interacting with visitors and delivering activities.

When Can I Do My Placement and for How Long?

Placements last at least 1 week, but can extend to 1 month for under-18s. They’re available year-round with multiple start dates monthly. Due to limited spots, early booking is recommended, especially during busy periods. Work placements run Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 am–4 pm. To be accepted, you must commit to working every day, including Saturdays.

How Do I Get Involved?

Complete the application form and have your parents or school sign the consent form. Mail both to the Museum Volunteer Manager. Ensure all sections are filled out. If you’re organising your placement independently of your school, get your parents to sign on behalf of your school. If you’re 16 or older and have finished secondary school, you’ll need to provide a reference. Your placement won’t start until we receive it. The Museum Volunteer Manager will acknowledge your application and send you more information.
