Are you fascinated by the mysteries of ancient Egypt? Do you enjoy sharing knowledge and engaging with others? The Egypt Centre, Wales’ largest collection of Egyptian antiquities, seeks passionate individuals to join our dedicated team of adult volunteers. With flexible schedules and a variety of rewarding roles, we offer a unique opportunity to contribute to the museum’s mission and delve deeper into the captivating world of Egyptology.

Why We Need Volunteers

Without volunteers, the Egypt Centre would simply be unable to operate. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am–4 pm, and comprises two galleries on separate floors. We rely on volunteers to maintain our galleries, ensuring they are safe and clean, and that all equipment is in working order. Volunteers welcome visitors, answer enquiries, and conduct guided tours. They also work as Education Leaders for visiting school groups and are actively involved in developing hands-on activities with the Learning and Engagement Co-ordinator. Many volunteers enhance existing activities by creating props like headdresses and wigs. They also pilot new activities before they are offered to visitors and provide valuable feedback. Additionally, some volunteers assist with shop duties, serving customers, answering enquiries, and performing general reception tasks.

Who We Are Looking For

We are seeking individuals aged 18–99 who are enthusiastic, enjoy working with others, and meeting people from all over the world. While an interest in Egypt is not essential, it can certainly be beneficial! Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds, including retired individuals, part-time workers, and students. Current Swansea University student volunteers can participate in the HEAR awards scheme.

What Can I Do?

The Museum needs volunteers to complete three essential and core roles. These are:

  1. Gallery supervision and maintenance
  2. Visitor and customer care/interaction
  3. Educational delivery

There are a variety of roles you can get involved in, all of which will have at least one element of the core functions. The following role descriptions are available:

Please note that we do not offer any behind-the-scenes curatorial work. All roles have an element of visitor interaction.

* This is a progression role; you will not be able to start at this level.

Are There Any Restrictions?

Yes. All potential volunteers need to have two satisfactory references and a DBS check. This is because we work extensively with vulnerable groups. These must be received and satisfactory before you start. All new volunteers also have an induction period when they start, which lasts a minimum of 20 hours. We specialise in working with people of all abilities. If you have any specific questions or concerns, please discuss them with the Museum Volunteer Manager.

When Can I Volunteer?

The Egypt Centre is open for volunteering Tuesday–Saturday, 10 am–4 pm. To volunteer, you’ll typically need to commit to at least 3 hours per week, or 1 hour during lunchtime. The 3-hour shifts are usually half a day, 10 am–1 pm or 1 pm–4 pm, with a 10-minute pre-shift meeting. Alternatively, you can volunteer for a full day, 10 am–4 pm. If you prefer, you can even volunteer for more than one day! We also offer 1-hour lunchtime volunteering.

If these times don’t suit your schedule, please don’t hesitate to contact the Museum Volunteer Manager to discuss other options.

How Do I Get Involved?

Simply complete the application form and post it to the Museum Volunteer Manager. They will acknowledge your application and begin processing it by requesting your references. Please follow all subsequent instructions to apply for a DBS check, which will be sent to your home address. Once you have received the DBS, contact the Museum Volunteer Manager. If your references have been returned, they will arrange an induction date.
